Not familiar with the Cupra name? This relatively new Spanish brand aims to inject some Latin flair into the market via its eye-catching designs and refreshingly different take on popular model types. Cupra originally started life as a sporty sub-brand of Seat, but today it’s a separate entity which has electrification high on the agenda, while still offering the choice of plug-in hybrids and petrol alternatives.
The range kicks off with the Leon, and while this car is based on the Seat Leon, it has its own distinctive flavour. Athletic design, intriguing interior, and characterful Cupra signature bronze detailing set it apart. A range of sporty petrol engines are on offer, including a Golf GTI rivalling 2.0-litre petrol. For those still wanting an engaging drive, but are looking for fewer emissions and more economy, the 1.4-litre plug-in hybrid might fit the bill. Should you need more space for man’s best friend, the Cupra Leon is also available as an estate.
The Cupra Ateca is again based on a Seat, but that’s no bad thing as it’s an excellent family SUV. Practicality meets performance with space for a growing family and a choice of two punchy petrol engines. Added all-weather reassurance can be had with 4Drive all-wheel drive supplying extra grip when conditions become challenging.
Cupra’s first bespoke model was the Forementor and it remains a visually enticing car to have on the driveway. Universally praised by the world’s media for striking a great balance between being a family SUV and entertaining to drive, this Cupra highlights the brand’s merits and desire to be seen as an alternative choice to the mainstream. A selection of petrol engines offer increasing levels of performance, with 4Drive again offered for those seeking all-wheel drive. Just like the Cupra, the Forementor can be specified as a plug-in hybrid.
The appropriately named Cupra Born is the marque’s first all-electric model and is offered with a choice of a 58kWh or 77kWh battery. Both have strong electric performance, but the latter can deliver a range of up to 343 miles. There are different power options depending on your priorities – performance or outright range – meaning there’s plenty of flexibility for potential Cupra Born owners.
Due to join the range in 2024, the Cupra Travascan is the Spanish manufacturer’s second electric car; its first all-electric SUV. Set to be launched with a range of performance options, this EV also possesses up to 341 miles of range.
Cupra isn’t stopping there with its future ambitions of marking itself apart from the established brands, something that’s apparent in concept vehicles such as the Dark Rebel. Strong design and great EV tech mean Cupra will appeal to those wanting to stand out from the crowd.
