Which electric cars have the longest ranges in 2020?

Electric car sales hit record highs during 2019 and the early months of 2020 proving that they’re a go-to option for increasing numbers of drivers. Fueled by big reductions in running costs and the lowest tax rates in years for company cars and salary sacrifice motorists, electric vehicles (EVs) have been rapidly accepted onto UK roads.

But perhaps the biggest driver towards electric cars is their increased range. With many more miles in the battery than early models, the latest EVs can really go the distance. Want to know just how far you could travel on a single charge? Read on for the top 10 electric cars with the biggest WLTP range figures according to manufacturer websites.

1. Tesla Roadster

620 miles or Aberdeen to Plymouth
Known for its sporty looks and top performance, the Tesla Roadster also delivers an enormous number of miles with its powerful battery that beats most petrol and diesels for mileage. Of course, top of the range comes at a cost but, if you can afford the monthly amount, you’ll be ready to go on long adventures or lots and lots and lots of shorter journeys without needing to charge. If the Roadster is out of reach right now, the good news is that this kind of long-range battery technology is likely to filter down to other models and manufacturers in the future.

2. Tesla Model S

375 miles or London to Swansea and back again
The Model S is a sleek, sporty looking electric car that offers speed and endurance with 375 miles in its battery. Motoring journalists who’ve tested the car say it delivers 360 miles under real-world driving conditions before the battery needs to be charged. That’s more miles than most petrol or diesel cars can manage on a full tank.

3. Tesla Model X

315 miles or Leicester to Glasgow
Another Tesla – this time it’s the model with the doors that lift up rather than opening outwards. Billed as a luxury SUV, its 328 mile range will cover the average UK journey of around 20 miles per day 16 times over. So, unless you go on a longer journey, you might only need to plug in every couple of weeks.

4. Tesla Model 3

323 miles or Leicester to Glasgow
Tesla’s most affordable car yet has got car enthusiasts hot under the collar. And a good deal of the reason for that is that the Model 3 comes with a very respectable 323 miles in its battery. A firm favourite with Tusker drivers, demand is high for these cars. So, if this model is for you, log in to get your quote on this extremely popular model.

5. Polestar 2

292 miles or Manchester to Canterbury
Owned by Vovlo, the Polestar brand is set to become a feature on UK roads. The manufacturer’s aim is to compete for Tesla Model 3 customers, so it’s no surprise that range features strongly in Polestar 2’s build. A sizeable SUV-style car, the 275 mile range is enough to get you from Manchester to London without needing to stop.

6. Jaguar I-Pace

292 miles or Penzance to London
As you’d expect from a Jaguar, the i-Pace offers rapid acceleration alongside a solid single-charge range of 292 miles. Jaguar describes the car as a “true driver’s car” offering the balanced weight distribution and instant torque you’d expect from a sports car.

7. Hyundai Kona Electric

279 miles or Bath to Middeslborough
The Hyundai Kona electric is an affordable EV with bags of room. Although not quite as fast in the 0-60mph stakes as other EVs it offers more va-va-voom than similar petrol or diesel cars. And of course with electricity instead of fossil fuel, it’s much more cost effective to run.

8.  Mercedes Benz EQC

259 miles or Bath to Hull
Recognisably a Mercedes Benz, the EQC is a 4×4 that provides everything the brand’s known for – but with an electric motor. Great performance, comfort and refined styling make the car enjoyable to drive. And it’s full of infotainment and driver assistance features too including a voice activated high resolution widescreen display.

9.  New Renault ZOE

246 miles or Cambridge to Swansea
A 100% electric city car and winner of the WhatCar? Car of the Year 2020 award for Small Electric Car, the New ZOE is truly better than ever. Winning features include a modern-looking and smart interior and its impressive electric range, the ZOE doesn’t disappoint and offers a brilliant driving experience.

10. Audi e-tron

239 miles or Southampton to Liverpool
Audi’s original electric car, the e-tron comes with ultra-rapid charging capability of 150kWh making it compatible with the next generation of chargers due to hit the UK. Drive one of these cars and you’ll be able to charge from empty to 80% in just 30 minutes.

So there you have it – 2020’s top 10 EVs with the longest single-charge ranges. All these cars attract a 0% benefit-in-kind tax rate for the 2020-2021 tax year, increasing to 1% in 2021-2022 and 2% in 2022-2023. Which means you can get behind the wheel of a brand new EV for a highly competitive monthly amount that also includes your car insurance, maintenance and servicing plus a whole lot more.
